Newmarket Race Course
Horseracing is a passion for many, and ask any enthusiast his favourite destination for the best racing experience ever and he is bound to point to the celebrated Home of Racing, the Newmarket Race Course. One of the greatest and historically-saluted centres for horseracing, Newmarket offers a lifetime experience for every fan of the legendary “Sport of Kings”.
Location: The horseracing course is the hub of the racing activity in the Newmarket town, situated in Suffolk, in England. It is owned by the Jockey Club Racecourses. To be precise, Newmarket is located on the border of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and is set around 60 miles from London city.
History: Horseracing was always one of the major activities in the town of Newmarket, and it was under Charles II that the sport was first initiated. One of the first horseracing events in Newmarket was held as long back as in the year 1664. Ever since, it has been the prime spot for horseracing in Britain, on par with other prestigious racecourses, namely the Ascot Racecourse and the Epsom Downs.
Features: There are as many as 2,500 racehorses under training in Newmarket, guided by around 77 trainers.
Race courses: The Newmarket racecourse holds two major courses, which are the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course. Both the tracks are meant to be used only for flat racing, and are wide and galloping in nature. As many as 9 Group 1 races, among the 32 British annual horse races, are hosted on these tracks.
- The Rowley Mile Course: This course has been named in the honour of Charles II’s favourite horse. It boasts of a track which is 1 mile and 2 km in length, has an L-shaped course, and has characteristic features of ‘The Bushes’ and ‘The Dip’. Short races are hosted on the straighter path, while the longer ones must divert into the right-hand track. It is during the Spring and Fall seasons that races are conducted here.
- The July Course: Racing during the Summer season is hosted on the July Course, and like the Rowley Mill, it has a turfed surface. The 1 mile 1.6 km long track is also referred to as the Bunbury Mile.
British Classic Races: There are several prestigious races that are held here, the major ones being the Jockey Gold Club and the Princess of Wales’s Stakes. The thoroughbred racing events attract the maximum viewership.
Other events: The spacious complex of the Newmarket Racecourse is a much sought after venue for conducting several diverse events, including Dog shows, Fun Runs, and Car Exhibitions. It also offers services for private parties, weddings and banquets.
Betting: The betting pattern in the Rowley course is determined by the wide layout of the racing course, making current bias draws inconclusive. It also sees a similar prospect on the July Course, and brings about an unpredictable effect on the draws. The best betting tip would be to make decisions based on prior races and results.
